Cities and areas in Spain

Arab Tower of Bujaco

The Bujaco Tower is the most beautiful one of the five that are left in the city when it was under Muslim control throughout the 12th century.

The 25 meters tall tower is also known as the "New Tower" or "Watch Tower". Its most popular name derives from the Calif Abu-ya-gub.

Cities and beaches in Catalonia

Costa Brava beach

Costa Brava beach

Engulfing the well known Costa Brava and the Costa Dorada, with their stretches of sandy beaches and high-rise hotels, the region of Catalonia receives about 12 million visitors a year. Known as one of Europe's playgrounds, with a wide array of beaches for the holiday-maker and a mass of places to visit, Catalonia has something to offer every visitor.

Barcelona is the cultural and industrial capital of Catalonia and is well worth a day or two visit. Pilgrims may go to Montserrat for it's scenery and religious background, known as the religious centre of Catalonia.

Begur, Catalonia

Mediaval Spanish town

The old town of Begur is situated some seven hundred feet above sea level, 3 miles inland and enjoys superb views over the coastline.

Enjoy a gentle stroll around the cobbled streets of this romantic town which shelters at the foot of a 16th century castle.

Begur has an attractive town square with bars, restaurants, cafes and a couple of nightclubs. In the high season there is live music in the square. Shops selling clothes, high class art, crafts of the local area and specialist food shops are dotted around the square.

As with many of the region's beautiful towns and villages, Begur is only minutes away from the rugged coastline.

The many hidden sandy coves and picturesque fishing villages are surrounded by the region's characteristic high, rugged hills.

Avila, Spain

Avila - city full of contrasts

Muralla de Avila

Muralla de Avila - the city walls

Ávila is a city of contrasts, the hustle and bustle of the market contrasts with the quiet repose of the temples and its cloisters.

Churches, convents, and hermit; beautiful palaces and the impressive cathedral provide Ávila's character and identity, in which the spirit of Santa Theresa of Jesus and of Saint John of the Cross still vibrate.

Muralla de Avila - city walls of Avila

At the river Adaja's side at 1630 meters from sea level, Avila is the highest city of Spain and possesses the longest city walls which still today surround the city (with a longitude of 2,526 mtrs, with a medium height of 12 mtrs, and 3 mtrs thick).

The city, as well as its churches, was recognized by UNESCO in 1985 as part of the World Heritage for Humanity.

There is no certain date of construction, although some theories date it as far back as 1090, and some to the second half of the 12th century.
